Within the Mathematics department, we aim to make the subject exciting and interesting for all pupils. Every classroom provides a safe and supportive environment in which pupils of all abilities are encouraged to reach their full potential. We understand that pupils learn in different ways and use a variety of strategies to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn effectively.

Throughout Key Stage 3 pupils are given the opportunity to participate in paired and group work, are actively involved in discussion and dialogue within the classroom and are expected to be supportive of other learners.

Teachers will provide pupils with regular feedback on progress and in addition to marking work will identify appropriate ‘individual targets’ for pupils. We encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning, to think about how they learn best and to reflect upon their progress.

We make effective use of ICT to enhance pupils learning and also provide opportunities for pupils to develop their own ICT skills and knowledge.

A great selection of software, including RM Learning’s ‘Successmaker’, is available to pupils in order that they can improve their numeracy skills in topics such as fractions, decimals, graphs, reflection, rotation, area, volume and algebra. We also use fun games like “Maths Kung Fu Master” to help boost pupils confidence and motivation and to sharpen their mental arithmetic and develop quick recollection of important Mathematical facts.

We expect that pupils do homework once a week in order to extend and enhance the good teaching that goes on in the classroom. Homework and revision clubs are held during lunchtimes for pupils needing support with their work.
